Who is Draupadi Murmu
Born in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, Draupadi Murmu is primarily a member of the BJP. She has been a cabinet minister in the state’s previous government in Odisha and has served in various departments. She has received numerous awards and accolades for her work, and is the winner of the Neelkanth Award for Best MLA.
Murmu is a soft-spoken politician and former governor of Jharkhand. She was appointed as the first tribal governor of Jharkhand, and is likely to be the face of the upcoming presidential election. In fact, she was a prime contender for the job in May 2015.
The BJP’s selection of Murmu as its presidential nominee has surprised many observers. The decision to nominate a tribal woman from Odisha was made in a meeting of BJP parliamentary board members held in Delhi. Several BJP leaders congratulated Murmu and her selection. Moreover, the party’s president JP Nadda was also present at the meeting. The nominations of Murmu are a strong indication of the BJP’s desire to take the presidency.
Draupadi Murmu is likely to draw support from non-NDA regional parties
The BJP has a wide base of support in the state and is likely to benefit from the split in the NDA. The party’s regional alliances have traditionally supported a single candidate. In the 2019 Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections, Draupadi Muru has drawn support from regional parties in the state. However, she is unlikely to win the election if the NDA gains a majority.
The INC is aiming to contest all 117 seats in Punjab. Without a clear chief ministerial candidate, the party will have to rethink its strategy to garner Hindu votes in the state. However, Muru has won over the Valmiki community in Doaba and will probably attract the support of non-NDA regional parties.
The AAP emerged as the second largest party in Punjab during the 2017 assembly elections. The party had initially ruled out forming an alliance with any other party. But since then, the party’s stance has changed. It now has 11 MLAs from the last assembly election. With the support of the Sikhs and non-Hindu Dalits, Draupadi Muru is expected to win the BJP presidency election in 2022.
Popular woman with a large following in the Nuba district
Draupadi Muru is a popular woman with a large following in the Nuba district. She is also popular with the Nonia community, who make up between 14 and 22% of the state’s population. The BJP’s coalition with the SBSP will ensure that she won’t lose any votes in the upcoming UP election.
It is unclear if the BJP’s alliance with the SAD will continue into the 2022 Assembly elections. The SP has forged alliances with smaller regional parties in the state, and the Bahujan Samaj Party has rekindled its relationship with the Bahujan Samaj Party. It is not clear whether the BJP will form any pre-poll alliances in other regions.
